Math --
Your child will be learning many new concepts this year.
Please have them practice their addition and subtraction facts daily. They will need to know their math facts up to 18 by the end of the year.
We will be working on the following concepts throughout the year: place value, numbers to 1200, add/subt facts, number lines, 2-digit addition and subtraction, data (graphing), money (coins up to $1.00), time (to the 1 min.), geometry, measurement, fractions, introduction of multiplication and division.
Language Arts --
We will continue to use a balanced literacy approach to incorporate the many different components of language arts. Students will be participating in Guided Reading Groups. Within the groups students will be working on the following skills: reading comprehension, fluency and spelling skills.
Reading --
Your child should be reading daily. Through daily reading your child will begin to improve their fluency and comprehension skills. I do not want to limit what they read. Please allow them to read magazines, cookbooks and newspapers along with the leveled readers or AR books they bring home.
Writing --
We will be learning the Writing Process throughout the year. Students will be writing in their journal a few times a week. They will also be writing the following: stories, responses to their readings and personal reflections.
Spelling --
The students will receive the new spelling pattern for the week on Monday. They will test over this pattern on Friday.
Social Studies --
In second grade our main focus for Social Studies is the local community. We will be studying about our local community throughout the year. We will study our local community, landmarks and governement. We will take a walking tour of Dripping Springs. The students will be able to see and connect many of the buildings and features discussed in class through this field trip.
Science --
Science will involve many hands-on experiences to help the students grasp the concept. We will be completing many experiments through the FOSS kits. These hands-on lessons will have the students actively involved in the lesson rather than just reading from a book. The students will be expected to participate fully in all experiments. They will be expected to observe, manipulate, write, reflect and connect their ideas with their classmates and through their science journal.
Specials --
This year the students will go to Art, Music, and PE through a rotation schedule.
They will also be visiting the Library - Wednesday 9:30-10:00.
The students will also go to the computer lab - Friday 10:45-11:30.
Homework Policy --
Second Grade students will not have homework this year.
